You are only 3 ingredients away from this “cream cheese” frosting! This quick and easy frosting is light and silky, and tastes as yummy as cream cheese frosting!

This is my super easy no cream cheese “cream cheese” frosting. This recipe is a great substitute for traditional cream cheese frosting. I make this easy recipe whenever I want to quickly whip up a small amount of frosting. Unlike a traditional cream cheese frosting, where you will need to use an electric mixer and a little more time, this frosting recipe only requires a whisk (hooray for less dishes!) and less than 5 minutes to make!
Why I love this recipe
Healthier Sour cream is a great substitute for cream cheese. It is less caloric dense while still achieving the typical cream cheese frosting flavour.
Quick and easy This recipe is so easy to make, you will have your frosting ready in less than 10 minutes. Plus, you will only need a small mixing bowl and a hand whisk – so yay for less dishes!
Common ingredients I don’t know about you, but I only buy cream cheese when I want to make a specific recipe, like cheesecake. On the other hand, I always have the ingredients in this recipe on hand, as they are staples in my kitchen. This makes it so convenient as I am able to make this recipe whenever I need to whip up a last-minute frosting.
Goes with almost everything This frosting goes with lots of desserts. If you don’t know already, I love baking and eating cake! I always have some sort of cake in my house. Sometimes, I have some extra cake laying around, but don’t want to go through the hassle of making a batch of buttercream icing. This icing is perfect as it’s not only easy to make, but goes with almost any cake I make.
What you will need
¼ cup powdered sugar, sifted
¼ cup thickened cream, full fat
½ cup sour cream
How to make this easy “cream cheese” frosting?
In a small mixing bowl, add powdered sugar, thickened cream, and sour cream. Whisk these ingredients together until fluffy. Use the frosting to ice your desserts or store it in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

What can I use this icing for?
This recipe is a great substitute for cream cheese frosting on red velvet cakes, carrot cake, banana cake, strawberry cake and many other desserts.
Can I make this “cream cheese” frosting in advance?
You can make this frosting in advance. To store the icing properly, keep it in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When you want to ice your dessert, leave the frosting out in room temperature for about 30 minutes before using it. This will give the frosting some time to ‘defrost’ and loosen up, making it easier to work with.
Can I use light thickened cream instead of full fat thickened cream?
Unfortunately, light thickened cream will not work in this recipe. This is because we need the fat content in full fat thickened cream in order to successfully whip this frosting up. If you use the light version, your frosting may not whip up as light and fluffy. As such, I also recommend using regular sour cream and not a light version.
How can I flavour this frosting?
This frosting is absolutely delicious as it is. However, if you would like to make it a little more interesting, you can whip in the zest of one lemon or a teaspoon of vanilla essence (or if you are feeling fancy, real vanilla bean).
