What spices are in chai?

While the spices used in chai spice vary from different sources, the main spices used in chai spice include cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg.

After experimenting with different quantities of these spices and a few additional spices, I have developed this chai spice blend recipe that I absolutely love.  In my homemade chai spice mix, I have added some black peppercorns to the said main spices.  I love that the black peppercorns add just a hint of spiciness to this chai spice mix.

    • Hi Kathleen, apologies for such a late reply!
Yes, add the whole cloves and black peppercorns in the spice grinder until it becomes a smooth powder. Then add the rest of the ingredients. The reason we add the whole cloves and black peppercorns first is to allow these two ingredients to become a powder before adding the other ground ingredients (which are in powder form). This allows for more even mixing of the ingredients.
