London fog latte in a white cup

I have always loved tea.  For me, I would always choose a tea over coffee any day!  This London Fog recipe is actually the drink opened my eyes to a world of tea lattes.  After trying this drink a few years ago, I became curious and started exploring different kinds of tea-based drinks.  Up till this day, especially on cold rainy days, this is a recipe I often make. I hope you will like it as much as I do!

What is a London Fog?

Originating from Vancouver, a London Fog is a tea latte made from sweetened Earl Grey tea with some steamed milk and a hint of vanilla.

How to make this London Fog?

Ingredients

Earl Grey tea This is essential, as it is not a London Fog without Earl Grey tea. You can use either loose leaf or tea bags.

Hot water In order to get the best tasting tea, filter your water before boiling it.

Brown sugar This will give your London Fog a richer taste. However, you may use white sugar or the sweetener of your choice too.

Vanilla extract Again, this ingredient is essential to make a London Fog. If you do not have vanilla extract, try swapping it out for vanilla essence.

Milk You may use any milk you’d like. My personal preference is full cream cow’s milk.

Instructions

Earl grey tea and brown sugar in a white cup, half filled
Steep the earl grey tea in the hot water for 5 minutes. Strain the tea into a cup. Stir in sugar.
a teaspoon of vanilla extract being added to the cup of earl grey tea
Add in vanilla extract.
frothed milk being added to the earl grey tea
Froth the milk in the milk frother.  My milk forther heats the milk up.  However, if yours does not, heat the milk up before frothing your milk. Once milk is frothed, add into the tea.
the completed cup of London fog
Enjoy your London Fog immediately.

Do I need a milk frother?

No, you don’t necessarily need a milk frother to make this drink.  I have a simple trick to make frothy milk without a milk frother, all you will need is a French press.  Simply heat the milk in a saucepan, transfer the milk into your French press, and pump the plunger until the milk doubles in volume.  You should get nicely frothed milk.  Alternatively, you can omit the froth by simply heating your milk over a stove top on low heat (making sure that your milk never comes to a boil) and adding it into your tea.

Can I use other teas apart from Earl Grey tea?

Yes, you can!  These are a few variations on London Fog, where Earl Grey tea is replaced with the respective teas:

  • Victoria Fog – lavender tea
  • Tokyo Fog – matcha tea
  • Dublin Fog – Irish breakfast tea
  • Cape Town Fog – rooibos tea
