The first time I tried a Vietnamese avocado smoothie was at my first part-time job, at a Vietnamese restaurant.  Although avocado smoothies sounded weird to me at first, I was very quickly proven wrong and this smoothie became my go-to smoothie at work. Two of favourite things about this job were: (1) make the Vietnamese rolls (Bahn Mi), and (2) make all the Vietnamese drinks!  I didn’t quite like carrying the hot bowls of Pho (Vietnamese beef noodle soups) around.

I loved this drink so much that I started making it at home for my friends and family.  So, here is my version of the Vietnamese avocado smoothie.  I hope you’ll like it!

What is a Vietnamese Avocado Smoothie?

Also known as Sinh Tố Bơ, this drink is sweet, thick, and naturally creamy made from blended avocado, milk, and condense milk.  This smoothie is one of the most popular Vietnamese drinks and is commonly found at street stalls and restaurants in Vietnam.  Avocado smoothie is so popular that it is even found in all the Vietnamese restaurants I have been to in Australia.

Why I love this smoothie

This smoothie is so filling that it doubles as a meal!  When avocados are in season, I would often make this avocado smoothie for breakfast and it would keep me full until lunch!

This recipe quick and easy to make – it only takes one step (blending all the ingredients together).

You can easily scale this recipe and make it in bulk.  Plus, you can make this smoothie in advance.  This makes it perfect for entertaining.

Ingredients you will need

Vietnamese avocado smoothie ingredients: milk, ice, condense milk, frozen avocado pieces

Avocado  I have found that Shepard and Hass avocados are the best avocados to make the creamiest for Sinh To Bo.  However, if you can use any avocado you have on hand.  The most important thing is that it has to be ripe!  To get an extra thick and cold smoothie, freeze your chopped up avocados before making this recipe.

Ice  This will make your smoothie thicker and extra cold!

Milk  I am using regular full cream milk in this recipe.  Feel free to substitute with the milk of your choice for a similar result.

Condensed milk  This is the traditional ingredient used to sweeten many Vietnamese smoothies.  However, to make a healthier avocado smoothie, simply substitute this with your preferred sweetener (eg honey, maple syrup, a couple of dates, or half a frozen banana).  This is also a good diary free alternative to sweeten your avocado smoothie.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I freeze avocados?

Using frozen avocados in your Sinh To Bo makes it even yummier, as it will be extra thick and cold!  To prepare your avocados, cut them in half, slice the insides into quarters, and use a spoon to scoop it out from its shell.  Arrange the individual pieces onto a baking tray (lined with baking paper), making sure the pieces do not touch each other, and freeze for at least 30 minute or until frozen.  After this time, you can remove them from the freezer and use immediately, or transfer them into a zip-lock bag or container, and store in the freezer for future use.  This is a great way to keep your avocados if you have too many.

Can I make this Vietnamese avocado smoothie without condense milk?

Yes, you can!  Although condensed milk is the traditional ingredient used to sweeten many Vietnamese smoothies, you can make this smoothie without condense milk.  Simply replace the condensed milk with your preferred sweetener (eg honey, maple syrup, a couple of dates, or half a frozen banana).  This substitution is a good alternative if you would like to make your avocado smoothie healthier.

Can I make this avocado smoothie vegan?

To make your avocado smoothie vegan, simply use a non-dairy milk and replace the condense milk with a sweetener of your choice such as palm sugar or agave nectar.

Can I make this smoothie in advance?

For the best tasting avocado smoothie, I recommend drinking your smoothie immediately after making it.  However, can make this smoothie in advance.  Once you have made your avocado smoothie, store it in the fridge in an air-tight container for up to 24 hours.

Avocado smoothie variations

Avocado chocolate smoothie  Add 1-2 tbsp of drinking chocolate or cocoa powder to your ingredients.  You will get a rich and creamy chocolatey drink!

Avocado mango smoothie For a summery twist, add half a mango or ½ cup of frozen mango to your smoothie ingredients and blend.  As the mango will give your smoothie some sweetness, you may want to reduce or leave out the condense milk for this variation.

Avocado banana smoothie Add 1 chopped up frozen banana to your smoothie.  As the banana will give your smoothie some sweetness, you may want to reduce or leave out the condense milk.  This variation will make your smoothie extra filling and can make a quick and healthy on-the-go breakfast.

Avocado coconut smoothie  For a tropical twist, replace the milk with coconut milk (or if you are feeling a little indulgent, coconut cream).
