So, you’ve got an abundance of ripe avocados at home, and cannot use them fast enough? Or like me, you buy lots of avocados on sale during avocado season? Don’t let them go to waste. Here’s all you need to know on how to freeze avocados!

Why freeze avocados?
Avocados are not the cheapest vegetables to buy, especially when not in season. So, if you do find a bargain you can always buy them in bulk and freeze them to use at a later date.
Are frozen avocados good?
Freezing avocados is a way to ensure that you will always have some on hand, even when they are out of season. They are perfect in many avocado recipes, such as: Guacamole, Avocado Smoothies, and Avocado Deviled Eggs. However, like all frozen produce, frozen avocados cannot replace fresh avocados in every dish. If your recipe does not call for smashed or blended avocado, you will be better off using a fresh avocado. This is because the freezing process will alter its texture.
How long do frozen avocados last in the freezer?
If the frozen avocados are stored in an air-tight container or a zip-lock bag, they will maintain their quality for about 6 months. Past this time, they will still be save to eat, but their quality may decrease.
How to freezer avocados without turning brown?

Although you can freeze avocados whole, I do like to prepare them for freezing. Here are some easy ways you can prepare your avocados for freezing:
Mashed Simply use a fork to mash the avocados, mix in a sprinkle of lemon juice, scoop the mashed avocado into ice cube trays, and freeze. You can keep the avocados in the ice trays. However, I prefer to take the frozen avocados out of the ice trays and transfer them into an air-tight container. This not only takes less space in the freezer than ice trays, but also allows the avocado to maintain its quality for longer.
Cubed Cut the avocados in halves, slice the flesh into quarters, and use a spoon to scoop it out from its shell. Arrange the individual pieces onto a baking tray (lined with baking paper), making sure the pieces do not touch each other, sprinkle the pieces of avocado with some lemon juice, and freeze for at least 30 minute or until frozen. Once frozen, transfer the avocado pieces into a zip-lock bag or air-tight container.
Pureed This method is very similar to preparing mashed avocados. However, instead of using a fork to mash the avocados, use a blender to puree the avocados. Once pureed, mix in some lemon juice. Then, transfer the pureed avocado into ice cube trays. Store them the same way as you would with mashed avocados (please refer above).
Halved This is probably the easiest way to freeze avocados. Simply cut the avocados in halves, remove the seed and skin. Place the avocado halves onto a tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle over lemon juice. Turn them over and do the same on the other side. Place the tray in the freezer for about 1 hour or until frozen. Once frozen, transfer them into zip-lock bags or air-tight containers.
How to freeze avocados for smoothies?

I love using frozen avocados in smoothies, as they make it even thicker and creamier.
To prepare your avocados, cut them in half, slice the flesh into quarters, and use a spoon to scoop it out from its shell. Arrange the individual pieces onto a baking tray (lined with baking paper), making sure the pieces do not touch each other, and freeze for at least 30 minute or until frozen. After this time, you can remove them from the freezer and use immediately, or transfer them into a zip-lock bag or container, and store in the freezer for future use. This is a great way to keep your avocados if you have too many.
NOTE: As we are cutting each half into quarters, one avocado will have 8 small pieces. This is good to note, as makes it easy to know how many pieces of avocado to use when you are making a recipe in the future.
As we will be using the avocados while they are still frozen in smoothies, there is no need to use lemon juice on them before freezing.
