homemade chai tea latte

I am a huge fan of chai lattes, and used to order it whenever I went out to a cafe. However, I found myself being disappointed with the quality of these chai lattes. It was not often when i came across a chai latte i truly enjoyed. Too many places used the premix stuff you get from the supermarket. Or worse, sometimes my chai latte would taste like steamed milk with only a hint of chai. Yes, I am pretty picky when it comes to chai lattes. But that’s when I decided to learn how to make it at home – the way I like it.

Why I love this recipe?

The main reason why I love this recipe is that I can make it the way I want. I am able to use real spices (none of that premix powder stuff) and adjust the sweetness to my liking.

I love that my homemade chai latte is made with only real ingredients. Unlike the store bought stuff, there is no added preservatives or additives.

This recipe is also so easy to make. With only 2 steps, you’ll be able to enjoy your chai latte in minutes!

As an added bonus, making chai lattes at home is so much cheaper! A mug of homemade chai latte cost less than $1, while a chai latte in a cafe is from $4.

What is chai latte?

Similar to a latte made with coffee, a chai latte is a drink that is made with a chai tea concentrate and steamed milk.

Does this chai latte have caffeine?

As this recipe contains black tea, this chai latte does have caffeine.

If you would like to make this drink caffeine free, simply omit the black tea. Your chai latte will not have the tea flavour or be as dark in colour, but it will still have an amazing sweet and spicy flavour.

Ingredients

  • Milk of your choice (I used skim milk)
  • Black tea bags or loose tea leaves
  • Chai spice mix
  • Maple syrup or your preferred sweetener
a teaspoon of chai spice powder on a small white plate, with a jar of chai spices in the background

How to make this homemade chai latte?

In a saucepan, add in the milk, tea leaves, and chai spice mix. Heat the ingredients up over medium heat, until it begins to bubble around the edges of the pan. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the tea steep for 3-5 minutes. Stir in the maple syrup until combined. Place the saucepan back over medium heat until the mixture is piping hot. Pour the chai tea mixture, through a sieve, into your favourite mug.

For a cafe style chai latte, froth some milk in a milk frother. Add the milk froth on top of the chai tea mixture and serve immediately.

Can I make this drink in advance?

You can scale this recipe and make a bigger batch of chai latte. Keep any leftovers in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 4 days.

Serve it cold, over some ice. If you are feeling extra indulgent, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, and garnish with some extra chai spice mix.

To serve it hot, reheat it over the stove. Alternatively, you can pour a cup of leftover chai latte into an electric milk frother. The milk frother will reheat your chai latte and froth it up at the same time.
